Miracle League of Amherstburg (Amherstburg)

The first of its kind in Canada, the Miracle League of Amherstburg  began play on September 18th 2011.  The Miracle League complex was completed in the following year. On opening day, the Miracle League rosters had grown to over 75 players. The players raced around the bases and chatted with their teammates in the dugouts as they celebrated. The Miracle League is about making new friends, building self-esteem and being treated like others.

Boccia

A precise Paralympic ball sport open to athletes with severe disabilities, offered by clubs across the province.

Italian Canadian Handicapable Association (ICHA) (Windsor)

The basic principle of the sport is to roll a bocce ball close to the target ball called a “palina”. Member athletes of all levels of abilities are encouraged to participate. Modifications are made for member athletes in wheelchairs. Bocce provides our member athletes the opportunity to have social contact, make friends and gain self-confidence.  All Bocce equipment is provided by the ICHA.

PowerHockey Toronto (Toronto)

PowerHockey Toronto is a not-for-profit charitable organization that is ushering in the next generation of powerhockey para-athletes in the Toronto area. The league runs a weekly house league from October through May each year, providing para-athletes with various disabilities and skill levels who use a power wheelchair the opportunity to partake in a recreational, yet competitive sport. Once the league championship is over, the season wraps up with a banquet where awards are handed out to recipients for their outstanding achievements.  Each summer a select team of the top players is chosen to represent the league at a tournament. Beyond the hockey, the league fosters friendships, relationships, and a tight-knit community of lifelong friends. From the coaches to the management, the organization is volunteer-run and defines itself as truly community-based.

The London Blizzard Sledge Hockey Club was formed in 1997 as a form of recreational therapy for children with physical disabilities. Sarnia Ice Hawks Sledge Hockey

Sledge hockey follows the same rules and structure as ice hockey with a few adaptations. Sledge hockey was designed for players of any age or gender that have disabilities but can be played by anyone. The player must wear full gear while they sit in a sledge that is designed for each individual’s needs. The player maneuvers along the ice using two specialized sticks with picks at one end to propel the sledge and a blade at the other end to handle the puck.

Woolwich Thrashers Sledge Hockey

Woolwich Sledge Hockey (also known as The Woolwich Thrashers) started in 2009. In the early years of the organization, there were often only a few players on the ice during Saturday practice. We now typically have a roster of over 30 players. The organization has also evolved into three programs. The “Fundamentals” group is comprised of young players who are learning the basics. WindReach Farm (Durham Region)

WindReach Farm is proud to offer therapeutic horseback riding lessons to individuals with disabilities. We are a member of the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA) and our lessons are taught by Equine Canada, CanTRA certified instructors, or individuals working towards their certification. WindReach Farm also offers riding programs to schools within the Durham District School Board, Durham Catholic School Board, and various private schools.

Rose City Riot Wheelchair Basketball (Windsor)

The Rose City Riot Parasports Club is a volunteer-run organization striving to bring accessible sports opportunities to Windsor and Essex County. Founded by players from the now defunct LaSalle Lightning Wheelchair Basketball Team, Rose City Riot membership is open to those both with and without physical disabilities. Our basketball program is open to individuals of all ages and levels of experience. A limited number of sports chairs are available for members to use. The ability to self-propel is required. Our long term goal is to recruit qualified instructors and coaches and develop additional parasports programming based on public interest.

Twin City Spinners Wheelchair Basketball (Waterloo Region)

The Twin City Spinners is a not-for-profit volunteer based sports organization dedicated to the promotion, growth and development of Wheelchair Basketball within the Waterloo Region (Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo). Member of the Great Lake Conference Wheelchair Basketball League.  The Twin City Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Team was formed in 1976 and joined the Southern Ontario Wheelchair Basketball League in 1977, and the National Wheelchair Basketball Association in 1980, competing throughout Canada and the USA. Through hard work and determination, team members improved their ranking from top 25 in the 1990s to National League Division 2 Champions in 2009.

Yoga & Dance

Adaptive wellness and movement programs offered by community organizations.

Italian Canadian Handicapable Association (ICHA) (Windsor)

YOGA classes are designed for member athletes of all levels of ability—including individuals who use wheelchairs—and are led by a certified yoga instructor. Yoga supports our member athletes by promoting coordination of the mind, body and emotions. It helps improve focus, concentration and self-confidence. No experience is necessary and the ICHA provides the yoga mats and equipment.

GROOVE AND GO DANCE classes are facilitated by an accomplished dance instructor. Through a mix of choreography and freestyle dance the classes are a source of fun and joy. These classes enable our member athletes to experience a greater connection to one another, express emotion and improve their overall health and well-being.
